Cutting/Unwinding our Threads for Hand Stitching

We always get asked how best to cut, or keep our threads with out messing up the skein or ending up with a big ball of tangled mess. Often this is a matter of personal preference so do what work best for you or for a specific project.

But hopefully these short tutorials will give you an idea of how we use them, and some useful tips.

Cutting a cotton skein…

We skein our individual cottons and silks slightly differently so when using the silk, undo the skein fully so its not twisted at all and cut it at both ends.

Some time it is preferable to un wind the skein on to a piece of card or a bobbin - especially useful for variegated threads, or if you want to use the thread in the sewing machine bobbin. This is often when the beautifully twisted skein can end up as a little birds nest of threads. Check out the video below to get our tips for successful unwinding
